SHAH ALAM - Organ donation and transplantation are permissible and encouraged in Islam.

Penang Mufti Datuk Seri Dr Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor said such procedure was permissible when there were no other alternatives available to save a life.

However, he said consent was needed from the living or deceased donors.

For living donors, he said their consent must be obtained before the procedure was carried while for a deceased donor, they must consent to the procedure before their death.

“From an Islamic perspective, organ transplantation and donation are permissible under the condition that there is no other alternative available to save the life of the patient.

“The treatment method should also not bring greater harm to the recipient or the organ donor if the donor is still alive,” he added.

Wan Salim said there were also no restrictions for Muslims to benefit from the organs of non-Muslims and vice versa provided that the above conditions were met.

Former Negeri Sembilan mufti Mohd Yusof Ahmad said although organ donation and transplantation were permissible, it was prohibited to donate the reproductive organs.
