KUALA LUMPUR - Gaming addiction must not be defined by the hours spent on gaming.

According to Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, the number of hours spent is how gamers improve the quality of their gaming and hone their craft.

"It's not just about the number of hours gamers dedicate to their passion.

"Some individuals can play up to 10 hours a day, such as our athletes, and still lead a good and healthy lifestyle," she said at the Goodday Charge launch in Ploy Damansara.

Hannah added that eSports is often a team-based endeavour, dispelling the misconception that gaming is isolating.

She said the government is keen on encouraging parents to invest in their children's eSports and sports interests from an early age.

"Understanding the concerns surrounding gaming addiction and mental health, the Ministry has also launched guidelines for effective governance in eSports to ensure the well-being of players is a priority," she said.

Hannah added that the recent allocation of RM30 million is a significant step in positioning Malaysia as a development hub for eSports.

"The government's intention is to attract international video game companies and studios to invest in the country's burgeoning eSports industry.

"This initiative aligns with the government's commitment to providing tax exemptions, both for eSports and sports-related activities, making it easier for enthusiasts to pursue their interests," she said.

She also added that the government is taking measures to extend these benefits to a wider range of sports items, including yoga mats, which were previously ineligible for tax exemptions.

"This broader scope of support is aimed at promoting a healthier lifestyle among Malaysians and also fostering the growth of the eSports and sports industries," she said.

Meanwhile, she expressed her gratitude to Goodday for supporting these initiatives.

"This collaboration will help dispel misconceptions about eSports, underscoring the educational and learning aspects of being an eSports athlete.

"The government and key stakeholders have high hopes that with sufficient funding, eSports and sports in Malaysia will continue to flourish, enhancing both individual and societal well-being," she said.
