Unity govt urged to show cohesive front, prioritise well-being - Analysts

SHAH ALAM - The unity government under the leadership of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim needs to navigate wisely in facing uncertain challenges while ensuring stability for the country's future.

Amidst various attacks from various quarters, the Prime Minister, as the head of the government must be prepared to continue the reform agenda with the coalition established.

Political analyst Professor Dr Sivamurugan Pandian proposed that all Cabinet members become unified "spokespersons" for Malaysia Madani, avoiding solo appearances and media feuds.

"His team must collectively be 'one voice' to carry out the reforms and changes that are desired, as well as ensuring that the unity government's relationships are strengthened by using an internal platform to express differences.

"Avoid 'warfare' through the media, including social media, to prevent internal conflicts from escalating as if they were stumbling blocks," he told Sinar, yesterday.

Meanwhile, Sivamurugan said that managing the cost of living and basic needs, which were often the focus of the people, should also be given attention to and handled easily and rationally.

He said this action was to ensure that the public did not feel burdened by the price rise, affecting their psyche.

"The community needs to be comfortable with having food, clothing and shelter.

"The index of happiness and well-being needs to be prioritised even though the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is said to be better this year.

"The government needs to manage public perception wisely, especially when dealing with the digitally savvy online community," he said.

Dilemma

Meanwhile, University Malaya Senior Lecturer Dr Mohammad Tawfik Yaakub believed that the unity government was facing a crisis of confidence and trust among the people.

He said that after a year leading the Federal Government, the people were still waiting for the comprehensive reforms promised by the dominant party leaders during the last general election campaign.

"For example, reforms in the Parliament institution and complete freedom of speech.

"In addition, the people also want to see issues such as the cost of living, prices of goods and the stock of essential goods like local rice and eggs addressed promptly.

"Until when do they need to deal with the situation of limited local rice and eggs?.

"This may seem trivial to some political leaders and individuals of means, but it is a serious issue for the common people," he said.
