SHAH ALAM - A former personal bodyguard recounts harrowing experiences from about 20 years ago, including attempted vehicle theft and a kidnapping attempt on the child of a former employer.

Mohd Nor Fazli Othman, 48, recalled a 2004 incident where he thwarted an attempt to steal his employer's vehicle, a businessman, after being pursued by another vehicle.

The assailants repeatedly tried to force his employer's vehicle off the road.

With 25 years of experience, he reacted quickly by jumping to the back of the MPV vehicle while brandishing a firearm.

"I directed the driver to continue the journey, and I immediately jumped to the back seat of the MPV to ensure that my employer and his family remained as safe as possible.

"While under pressure, I pointed the gun to make the suspects aware that this vehicle is guarded by an armed security guard.

"Then the suspects ceased their threat, and we quickly left the area," he recounted to Sinar recently.

Now a manager at a luxury car workshop, Nor Fazli still actively works as a personal bodyguard and high-powered motorcycle VVIP rider, both domestically and internationally.

Despite being a father of five, he stressed the importance of his duty, even if it means temporarily sacrificing time with his family.

"Because working hours are usually irregular, rest days and annual leave mentioned in the contract or offer letter are merely formalities.

"It all depends on the employer. If they prioritise family time, it means they are not ready yet," he added.

On compensation for heirs in the event of death, Nor Fazli said they have preliminary discussions with the employer before signing the contract to reach a mutual agreement.

The employer commits to providing adequate compensation to ensure the family's well-being after his potential absence.

"In a career as a bodyguard, some insurance companies are reluctant to offer products due to the risks involved.

"Fortunately, my employer negotiated with the insurance company to provide me with accident protection with a high premium," he said.
