PH defends Kuala Kubu Baharu seat

HULU SELANGOR - Pakatan Harapan (PH) defends the Kuala Kubu Baharu state assembly seat it has held since 2013 after its candidate Pang Sock Tao wins the by-election today.

Pang’s victory representing the unity government was announced by Kuala Kubu Baharu returning officer Yuhanas Auree Kamaruddin at the Hulu Selangor district multipurpose hall and sports complex, tonight.

Pang received 14,000 votes with a majority of 3,869.

The victory also saw the 31-year-old woman beat three of her challengers, namely Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Khairul Azhari Saut, Hafizah Zainuddin representing Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) and Independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin.

Khairul obtained 10,131 votes, followed by Hafizah (152) and Nyau (188).

Meanwhile, Yuhanas said there were 263 spoilt votes with a turnout of 61.51 per cent.

The Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election which witnessed a four-cornered contest was held following the death of incumbent Lee Kee Hiong, 58, on March 21 due to cancer.

In the state election in August last year, Lee defeated PN candidate Teoh Kien Hong with a majority of 4,119 votes.

Lee first represented the constituency in 2013 when she defeated MCA's Ooi Hui Wen with a majority of 1,702 votes.

Based on Election Commission (EC) data, a total of 40,226 voters in the state assembly were eligible to vote, including 863 early voters.

A total of 18 polling centres with 74 polling streams opened simultaneously starting at 8am and closed at 6pm, today.

However, the polling station at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Bukit Fraser Chinese which had 40 voters closed at 2pm.
