Nur Dania Syuhada to lead Malaysia’s Under-19 women’s cricket squad

KLANG - Malaysia has officially unveiled its Under-19 women’s cricket squad for the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place from Jan 18 to Feb 2.
The announcement was made during a media event at the Bayuemas Cricket Oval, where the Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) revealed an 18-player shortlist led by captain Nur Dania Syuhada Binti Abedul Samad from Sarawak.
The final 14-member squad will include 11 players for match days and three reserves, with four additional players on standby.
Matches will be hosted at four venues: Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur, YSD-UKM Cricket Oval in Bangi, Johor Cricket Academy Oval and Borneo Cricket Ground in Kuching.
Mohammed Iqbal Ali Kassim Ali commended the team’s dedication and preparation.
“These young athletes, led by Nur Dania Syuhada, represent the determination and excellence that define Malaysian cricket.

"Their selection reflects rigorous training and unwavering commitment to the sport. We are confident they will make the nation proud on the international stage,” he said.
Malaysia is the sole Southeast Asian country participating in this World Cup, marking a significant milestone for the nation’s growing presence in women’s cricket.
Iqbal added that the tournament would serve as valuable preparation for the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand, where the team aims to secure medals.
“This experience will not only elevate their skills but also position us strongly for the SEA Games in 11 months.
"We encourage all Malaysians to support the team, whether by attending matches in person or watching them online via ICC TV,” he said.
At the event, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh officiated the jersey presentation, emphasising the importance of opportunities like this for young athletes.
“This is a pivotal moment for Malaysian sports, showcasing the talent and potential of our young cricketers. The Youth and Sports Ministry is committed to initiatives that nurture grassroots talent and bring international recognition to Malaysia. We wish the team the very best in this historic tournament,” she said.
The MCA also announced the formation of a Special Development Committee to manage government grants for grassroots cricket development.
This includes the RM1 million allocated in Budget 2025 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Iqbal stated that the committee would ensure effective use of the funds. “We have brought together a team of experts to strengthen the foundation of cricket in Malaysia, focusing on grassroots talent scouting and development,” he said.
Hannah applauded the initiative, adding that the establishment of the committee reflects a commitment to transparency and efficient use of public funds.
Iqbal also expressed gratitude to supporters and sponsors, including the Youth and Sports Ministry, National Sports Institutions (NSI), Sime Darby Foundation and the Education Ministry.
“Our partners have been instrumental in empowering our athletes and advancing Malaysian cricket. Special thanks to the Education Ministry for accommodating our players, most of whom are students, in balancing academics and sports,” he said.
