Selangor RTD leverages social media, TikTok to boost road safety awareness
The primary goal of these initiatives was to enhance road safety.

SHAH ALAM – The Selangor Road Transport Department (RTD) has established a dedicated online advocacy unit, utilising popular social media platforms such as TikTok, Facebook and Instagram to disseminate vital road safety information and enforcement updates.
Its director Azrin Borhan highlighted the success of these campaigns, noting that they had garnered positive responses from social media users, who eagerly anticipate the department's posts and engage with their content.
“We have a specialised division within RTD Selangor called the Road Safety and Corporate Department, responsible for planning and executing exhibitions, campaigns, and advocacy programmes targeted at all age groups in Selangor,” Azrin said during a recent meeting.

He emphasised that the primary goal of these initiatives was to enhance road safety. In 2024 alone, the department had already carried out 137 programmes catering to a wide range of audiences.
These campaigns include seasonal safety initiatives during major festivities such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidiladha.
The Road Safety and Corporate Unit (UKJRK) within RTD Selangor played a crucial role in organising and implementing these events, which aim to raise awareness about the importance of road safety.
“Our target groups include government agencies, private sector organisations, NGOs, educational institutions such as preschools, primary and secondary schools, as well as universities.
“We also engage with local communities, including resident associations, property management bodies, e-hailing and P-hailing drivers, and state-level stakeholders,” he said.
In addition to these ongoing initiatives, RTD Selangor integrates advocacy programmes into roadblocks, providing road users with safety awareness briefings.
As part of efforts to reduce accidents among high-risk groups, the department encourages individuals to obtain driving licences from accredited driving schools.
It also promotes motorcycle safety courses, the use of protective gear such as helmets and riding equipment, and initiatives like the Helmet Exchange Programme, where non-SIRIM-certified helmets are swapped for those meeting safety standards.
Azrin added that RTD Selangor collaborates with strategic partners to organise safe driving courses, safety workshops, and road safety education initiatives, leveraging social media to reach a wider audience.
Through these comprehensive efforts, the department aims to foster greater public awareness and ultimately reduce road accidents across the state.
