What we know so far: Cyberjaya student murder, ATM withdrawals and hunt for suspect

SHAH ALAM - The brutal murder of a 20-year-old university student in Cyberjaya has taken a chilling turn as police discover that the suspect allegedly used the victim's ATM card for multiple unauthorised withdrawals shortly after the crime.
What Happened?
The victim, a 20-year-old female student studying Physiotherapy at a private university in Cyberjaya, was found murdered in her hostel room at the Mutiara Ville condominium on June 24, 2025.
She was found unconscious with visible injuries on her body by a friend who immediately alerted the police.
Authorities have confirmed there were no signs of forced entry into her unit and a post-mortem revealed that her cause of death was consistent with blunt force trauma to the head.
Initial investigation revealed several personal items of the victims were missing, including her laptop, mobile phone and cash.
Notably, her ATM card was also among the missing items and police discovered that the suspect had made five to six unauthorised withdrawals from various ATMs across the city soon after the murder.
What Do the Police Say?
Sepang District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman confirmed that the investigation is actively focusing on tracking down the suspect who used the victim’s ATM card.
“The suspect began making withdrawals using the victim’s ATM card not long after the murder,” he was quoted as saying.
Police are reviewing closed circuit television (CCTV) camera footage from the area, although some cameras, including those in the corridor and the lift, were either non-functional or absent.
"We are actively tracking the suspect's whereabouts and gathering witness statements to further progress the investigation," Norhizam said.
He added that the police had not found any evidence indicating that the victim was sexually assaulted, contrary to some claims circulating on social media.
Meanwhile, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan also said they have already acquired CCTV footage from various sources and are now working on tracing the suspect's whereabouts.
"The footage will be used to identify the suspect and narrow down his location," he reportedly said.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
Public Concern and Safety Measures
In response to the tragic incident, Perikatan Nasional and Bersatu Chairman of the Education Portfolio Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah expressed his condolences and called for a full and transparent investigation.
He also raised concerns about the safety of students at private universities in Malaysia, urging a reevaluation of the safety protocols at student accommodations.
“I urge the government to reassess the safety protocols at private universities, including campus access control and cooperation with authorities. The safety of students must be a top priority.
“This tragedy cannot be overlooked and immediate action must be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future,” he said.

Public outrage was swift and widespread with many taking to social media platforms like X and Reddit to express their condolences and concerns over public safety.
"Heartbroken over the death of a student at University of Cyberjaya. Students cared yet the university stays silent. Why? Students deserve safety, not silence." X user, @SeverusSuren7 posted.
"Sickening. Not the first time, Cyberjaya is low-key a criminal city. Multiple reports and cases have been swept under the rug. We need to make this a national news." X user @RedReinzx11 wrote.
Many were quick to point out the false rumours that surrounded the sexual assault allegation of the case.
"I hate this because 1) a young woman was murdered and 2) the news/socmed initially spread the fake news of her being sad. Even the current top post of this sub is that false information," user u/frs1023 wrote on reddit.
