‘Turbaned Tornado’ Fauja Singh dies in road accident at 114

The marathon legend, who inspired generations with his extraordinary late-life athletic feats, was reportedly struck by an unidentified vehicle around 3.30 pm while crossing the road.

SHAH ALAM - The world is mourning the loss of an icon. Fauja Singh, known across the globe as the 'Turbaned Tornado' passed away at the age of 114 following a tragic road accident in his native village of Beas Pind near Jalandhar.

The marathon legend, who inspired generations with his extraordinary late-life athletic feats, was reportedly struck by an unidentified vehicle around 3.30 pm while crossing the road.

He succumbed to his injuries later that evening at a private hospital.

Born on April 1, 1911, Fauja Singh lived through the defining events of an entire century.

At an age when most people are confined to wheelchairs, Fauja laced up his running shoes. He ran his first marathon at 89.

By 100, he had become the oldest person ever to complete a full marathon, finishing the 2011 Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

Renowned for his relentless spirit, he broke multiple age-group records and kept competing in races until the age of 101.

Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria mourned the loss of Fauja Singh, describing Fauja Singh as a symbol of resilience and noting that his passing has left both the state and the world in deep sorrow.

"Deeply saddened by the passing of Sardar Fauja Singh Ji, the legendary marathon runner and symbol of resilience.

"At 114, he joined me in the ‘Nasha Mukt – Rangla Punjab’ march with unmatched spirit. His legacy will continue to inspire a drug-free Punjab," he posted on X.
