Security tightened at Bintulu LNG facilities following threat?

SHAH ALAM - The government has ordered immediate tightening of security at all liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Bintulu, Sarawak, following a reported security threat against the complexes.

The National Security Council (MKN), in a statement on Monday said the directive was necessary to allow security forces and relevant agencies to carry out urgent investigations.

“The public is reminded not to speculate on this statement. National security agencies remain prepared to face any eventuality and have already implemented control measures,” the council said.

No details of the threat had been made public so far.

Petronas: No impact on LNG supply at present

Following MKN’s announcement, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) confirmed that its LNG operations remain unaffected.

The national oil company stressed that, at present, there has been no disruption to production or supply from its Bintulu facilities.

“We take such matters with the utmost seriousness and are working closely with the authorities to assess and address the situation.

“Please be assured that the safety and well-being of our employees, contractors and surrounding communities continue to be our highest priority,” Petronas said in a statement on Monday.

For the record, the Bintulu facility consists of nine LNG production making it one of the top five largest LNG plants in the world.

The LNG complex can produce up to 29.8 million tonnes of LNG per year, which is equivalent to the energy consumption of around 10 million homes.

As one of the world’s largest LNG production centres, supplying for both Malaysia’s domestic market and international buyers, any disruption at these facilities could have ripple effects on global LNG supply chains and pricing.
