IPOH – The Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) described Pas’ proposal that the Prime Minister must be under 70 years old as a subtle political signal rejecting the candidacy of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Its youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim said that although Pas did not mention any names directly, the statement clearly touched on the age factor of the former Prime Minister, who has already passed 70.

He said the proposal was raised at a time when Perikatan Nasional (PN) was in the process of choosing its prime ministerial candidate should they form the government in the future.

“This proposal came in the middle of the polemic on determining PN’s prime minister candidate. So, I see it more as a disagreement with Muhyiddin.

“In simple terms, they don’t want Muhyiddin, they just didn’t say it outright, instead using age as the excuse,” he told reporters.

He said this after officiating the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals Community Health Observation Network (MASCHON) for the Tambun parliamentary constituency in collaboration with the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) at the NCSM-Caritas Hall, Kampung Simee here on Wednesday.

Kamil said that the main criteria for a leader are not merely age, but rather the ability to work, intelligence, physical health and understanding of the people’s needs.

Earlier, Pas President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, during the 71st Pas Annual Congress, stressed that he was not eligible to be Prime Minister due to age and health factors.

He said that a suitable candidate must be under 70 years old, healthy and strong enough to lead the country.

However, Hadi clarified that his remarks referred to himself, not to others.

On the political cooperation for the Sabah State Election (PRN), Kamil also confirmed that negotiations between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) on working together for the election are still ongoing.

The political secretary to the Finance Minister said all parties must find common ground to ensure political stability in the state.

“We’ve learned from past experiences that without political stability, the people and the state’s economy will suffer.

“That’s our foundation in negotiations and I am confident that in the next few weeks there will be positive developments,” he said.

Meanwhile, commenting on DAP’s suggestion that the 16th General Election (GE16) be held simultaneously with all State Legislative Assembly elections, Muhammad Kamil said the matter is subject to discussions at the central and state leadership levels, as well as the consent of the Malay rulers.
