Bersatu 'losing direction' post-AGM; needs Muhyiddin to avert PN crisis - Analyst
Zaharuddin described Muhyiddin as the true architect of Bersatu who must return to lead the party he founded after years of playing the role of an elder statesman offering guidance from the sidelines.

ALOR SETAR – A political analyst has urged Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to step out of his comfort zone and reclaim the post of Opposition Leader to revive Bersatu’s strength and solidify the Perikatan Nasional (PN) bloc.
Dr Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri said the move should be made urgently as Bersatu is now grappling with internal leadership issues and a loss of direction following its 2025 Annual General Meeting (PAT).

Zaharuddin described Muhyiddin as the true architect of Bersatu who must return to lead the party he founded after years of playing the role of an elder statesman offering guidance from the sidelines.
“This is the time for Muhyiddin to step out of his comfort zone and take over the position of Opposition Leader from his deputy, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin. This move should have been made long ago for the sake of the party’s future,” he told Sinar.
He said the 2025 assembly exposed long-concealed weaknesses within Bersatu when what should have been a constructive debate session turned into a battle of egos among leaders.
“What is more worrying is that no one in the party dared to question Muhyiddin’s absence at the forefront, especially in Parliament.
"Hamzah may be experienced, but he lacks the political gravity needed to unite the party or earn public trust. Bersatu Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, who was once viewed as a kingmaker, is now increasingly irrelevant,” he said.
Zaharuddin said Hamzah’s ability was also questionable, as his voice was often drowned out by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the Dewan Rakyat.
“Facing Anwar requires charisma, executive experience and high credibility. This is not merely about personal ability but about being in a different political league altogether,” he said.
He warned that if Muhyiddin continued to refuse the position, Bersatu and PN would be seen as lacking seriousness in their ambition to become a viable alternative government.
