Mooncakes with heart: Bringing light to kidney patients this mid-autumn

The Mid-Autumn Festival is often marked by lanterns glowing in the night sky, families gathering for tea and the sweet richness of mooncakes shared between loved ones.

But this year, Malaysians are being invited to celebrate with an added touch of purpose, by turning a timeless tradition into a gift of life.

The National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF) has launched its annual Mooncake Charity Drive, a heartfelt campaign that blends festive cheer with compassion. With a target to raise RM50,000, all proceeds from the initiative will go towards subsidising dialysis treatment fees for underprivileged kidney patients.

For the more than 1,700 patients under NKF’s care, dialysis is not a choice, it is a lifeline. Many come from the B40 community, where financial struggles make life-saving treatment even harder to sustain.

Contributions from the campaign directly ease their burdens, offering not just medical relief but also dignity and a better quality of life.

In partnership with Oversea and Yooky, NKF has launched its three-month Mooncake for Charity campaign by offering Set A and B Mooncakes in contributing to a charitable cause.

NKF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Choo Kok Ming, said that each mooncake box purchased brings real, tangible help to someone struggling with chronic kidney disease.

“It is a simple act of giving that carries a lasting impact,” Choo said.

This year, NKF has partnered with Oversea and Yooky, offering an array of halal-certified mooncake sets designed to delight. With flavours and packaging that blend tradition and elegance, these mooncakes are ideal not only for family tables but also as thoughtful gifts for friends, colleagues or business partners.

Each box carries more than just festive joy, it carries hope. By purchasing one, Malaysians are reminded that the act of sharing can extend far beyond the dining table and into the lives of those who are quietly fighting to survive.
