Both men and women have meaningful roles in serving humanity.

SHAH ALAM - Activist Dr Fauziah Mohd Hassan said women play crucial roles, especially in situations that call for calm, patience and compassion.
Responding to online criticism questioning women’s involvement in humanitarian missions, the volunteer with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition x Thousand Madleens to Gaza humanitarian mission said both men and women have meaningful roles in serving humanity.
“We all have our roles to play wherever we are,” she said addressing comments suggesting that women should “stay at home” instead of joining humanitarian efforts.
Dr Fauziah said in high-tension environments, such as those under Israeli occupation, the presence of women can often help de-escalate conflict.
She noted that the Israeli Occupying Forces or what she described as “a genocidal army,” frequently used intimidation tactics, including torturing individuals in front of others, to spread fear.
“In such situations, women can play a crucial role in calming tensions.
“Bringing in a woman, especially one who appears non-threatening such as an elderly or gentle figure, can help defuse aggression. If a strong muscular man steps in, the soldiers might feel provoked,” she added.
Dr Fauziah said women often approached tense moments with greater patience and composure.
“We can negotiate more calmly, avoid shouting and communicate in ways that lower tension. This is part of our strength and contribution,” she said.
She reminded that women have always played important roles throughout history, even during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
“For instance, Ummu Haram binti Milhan was the first woman martyr who died at sea,” she shared.
Islam, she said never confined women to the home or discouraged them from taking active roles.
A woman can contribute from home or in the field, as long as she inspires others to do good, she added.
Dr Fauziah also quoted the Quran to emphasise gender equality in doing good deeds.
“As Allah says in the Quran, whoever does good, man or woman, will be rewarded. That is what we strive for to do good and earn our reward,” she said.
