SHAH ALAM – Police have issued a warning to the public regarding the dangerous evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, moving from simple deepfake entertainment into sophisticated APK file scams designed to steal personal data, including banking credentials and One-Time Passwords (OTPs).

According to Sepang district police Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) head Assistant Superintendent Muhammad Mahesh Kumar Risya Abdullah, scammers were taking advantage of the rapid evolution of AI to create more convincing fraud schemes.

“We are aware of many fake videos online. Scammers now use AI to edit photos or videos of celebrities, politicians, or even powerful people for scams. This includes false investment promotions and money-making schemes from streaming videos,” he told Sinar Daily.

He cautioned that AI technology, while useful in many sectors, has also made it easier for cybercriminals to deceive victims.

“When AI first started, people used it for fun or for security apps. But over time, these simple technologies evolved to collect more personal data. Through funny apps, games, or filters, scammers can collect facial data without people realising it,” he added.

Muhammad Mahesh said the public should remain alert when downloading apps or clicking links, especially from unknown senders.

“Be careful with APK files. Scammers often send fake apps, fake invitations, or fake documents. Once installed, your phone could be infected with malware that lets scammers access everything, including your bank details and OTP,” he said.

In some cases, he said, such malware could turn the phone into a remote-access tool.

“Your phone can act like a TeamViewer app; while you’re using it, someone else could be looking through your data without you knowing,” he added.

He advised users to avoid opening any suspicious links or files, especially from unfamiliar numbers pretending to be friends or delivery services.

“These APK scams are growing because almost all banking transactions are done via smartphones. Once you suspect your phone is compromised, call your bank immediately to freeze your account, uninstall all banking apps, and format your phone,” he said.
