WASHINGTON - Families in the United States and Canada have filed lawsuits against OpenAI, with some alleging that their relatives took their own lives after interacting with the ChatGPT chatbot, the Wall Street Journal reported, as cited by Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

Seven lawsuits submitted on Thursday in California courts claim that prolonged conversations with the chatbot triggered delusional states in individuals, sometimes resulting in suicide, according to the report.

The complaints said that four people had committed suicide following contact with the chatbot, the newspaper reported.

The plaintiffs are seeking monetary compensation and demand changes to ChatGPT’s operations. Specifically, they want conversations to automatically end if suicide methods are discussed, the report added.

OpenAI developed ChatGPT, which quickly gained popularity after its late November 2022 launch, reaching its first million users within a week. US billionaire Elon Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015 but later cut ties with the company. - BERNAMA
