Thailand is turning the countdown clock into a mini-vacation.
The country’s Cabinet has approved Jan 2, 2026 as a special public holiday, extending the New Year break from Dec 31 to Jan 4, 2026.
The move is not just about popping champagne and fireworks but it’s also about firing up Thailand’s economy.
“This extended break is not just about celebration, it’s a strategic push to revitalise tourism and stimulate spending.
“We expect a surge in hotel bookings, transport usage and local commerce," said a government spokesperson, according to Bangkok Post.
The Tourism and Sports Ministry hailed the decision, saying the five-day holiday will help power up domestic travel and lift local businesses still bouncing back from slow economic recovery.
To make the most of the long break, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) plans to roll out special deals, travel packages and festive promotions across the country. From the sandy shores of Phuket to the street food havens of Chiang Mai.

Banks will close nationwide on Jan 2, 2026, but the private sector has the flexibility to decide whether to take the day off.
So before packing those beach bags, it’s best to double-check with Human Resource (HR) or risk spending your long weekend in the office instead of on the islands.
If you’re planning to join the New Year rush, maybe ring in 2026 by the Andaman Sea or at a rooftop bar in Bangkok. You better lock in those reservations early.
