SHAH ALAM – National professional men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia has announced a temporary break from competitive badminton, aiming to return refreshed and ready for the 2026 season.

In a personal statement shared on his Instagram account, the 27-year-old athlete reflected on a challenging year.

"(The year) 2025 has been somewhat of a challenging year and also a learning curve when it comes to managing my physical health.

"There are days when I feel on top of the world and there are days when I feel the effects of coming back from that ankle injury and the nagging back pain," he wrote.

He said since his last competitive match at the China Masters in September, he and his team have been working closely with medical experts to determine the best way forward.

"After taking account of all the feedback and most importantly listening to my body, I feel it is best to close the chapter on 2025 and focus on the upcoming 2026 calendar," he added.

Reflecting on the year, he admitted that it had been an emotional and physical rollercoaster, both physically and emotionally.

He also discovered new personal interests, including a fondness for art, which provided a creative outlet during his recovery.

Throughout the year, he remained grateful for the unwavering support of his family, friends, team, sponsors and fans, who have been by his side every step of the way.

"I remain motivated and spirited to return to the court. January is just around the corner," Lee said.

Meanwhile, fans took to the comments section to share messages of encouragement, urging him to take the time he needed to rest and recover while pledging their continued support until he returned to the court.

Social media user @Aarontjj7 wrote, "Wait for you!! God bless! Come back in your best condition!!" while @julianaaffens wrote "It’s ok. Come back stronger than before, ok. We all wait for you."

Another social media user, @Amirasweetnadia reminded him that "Healing is a journey, so enjoy it while it lasts," and @nursyahyran said "We are always supporting youuuuuu."

Lee, who rose to prominence after winning the 2019 BWF World Tour Super 300 title at the Thailand Masters has consistently been one of Malaysia’s top men’s singles shuttlers.

He also contributed to Malaysia’s medal haul in major international tournaments, including the 2022 Commonwealth Games and Thomas Cup.

Earlier this year, speculation about his physical condition surfaced after he shared a personal drawing on social media, hinting at a difficult period.

Despite the setbacks, his commitment to badminton and his fans remained resolute, as he prepared for a comeback next year.
