SHAH ALAM – UM Specialist Centre (UMSC), Malaysia’s premier quaternary hospital, recently hosted the second installment of its Master Class 2025: Cardiac, Neuro and Vascular Clinical Essentials.

This clinical symposium brought together six prominent experts from both public and private medical sectors, including leading specialists from UMSC and Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), with the goal of bridging knowledge gaps in complex patient care, particularly in vascular conditions and spine surgery.

The sessions highlighted the latest advancements in the management of neurological, cardiac, coronary, aortic and peripheral vascular conditions, as well as innovations in dialysis vascular access.

Developments in spine surgery were also emphasised, showcasing minimally invasive procedures and techniques for managing complex spinal deformities.

These discussions highlighted UMSC’s ongoing commitment to surgical precision, innovation and excellence in patient care.

Universiti Malaya (UM) Board of Directors Chairman, Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar said that the ecosystem of UM, UMMC and UMSC represents a dynamic public–private partnership in academic healthcare.

“Quaternary care is rare in Asia, but UMSC is bold enough, backed by unmatched expertise and rigorous research, to proudly position itself as the country’s premier quaternary-care hospital in 2022.

Meanwhile, UMSC Chairman Datuk Zulkarnain Md Eusope highlighted that UMSC’s vision is clear: to be a center of medical excellence that combines academic credibility, compassionate care, and operational sustainability.

“In pursuing this vision, we are guided by three simple principles. First, that patients must always come first. Every decision, every investment, every innovation must ultimately benefit the people we serve.

“Second, that knowledge must be shared, not stored, for the true measure of our expertise lies not in what we know, but in how we use that knowledge to teach, to heal, and to inspire others.

“And third, that governance must be strong and forward-looking, for as a Board, we remain deeply committed to ensuring that UMSC is managed with integrity, transparency and accountability. These are values that will sustain us for generations to come,” he said.

UMSC Chief Executive Officer Norzaiton Senusi stressed the collaborative spirit of the event.

"Today’s Master Class is a reflection of who we are at UMSC: a community of clinicians, researchers and healthcare professionals united by a shared purpose to care, learn and grow together.

“Under the theme ‘Cardiac, Neuro and Vascular Clinical Essentials,’ we focus on areas where teamwork and precision truly make a difference in saving lives.

“As Malaysia’s Premier Quaternary Hospital, we take pride in bridging academia and clinical practice, turning knowledge into healing and collaboration into better care for our patients.

“Our remit extends beyond Malaysian healthcare. UMSC attracts expatriates, health travelers and international referrals, strengthening our role as a regional hub for specialised care,” she said.

Key topics included updates on Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) focusing on Ischaemic Stroke and Intracerebral Haemorrhage, Acute and Critical Limb Ischaemia, Thrombectomy versus Thrombolysis in Ischaemic Stroke, Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Vascular Access Complications and Management.

By hosting such initiatives, UMSC continues to reinforce its role as Malaysia’s leading quaternary hospital, ensuring that the nation’s best medical minds remain in Malaysia to serve local patients, while also contributing to regional healthcare leadership.
