Astro Awani journalist dies after Hatyai flood coverage, suspected heart attack
Asry Ahmad is believed to have suffered a suspected heart attack in the early hours while traveling home after completing his coverage.

SHAH ALAM – An Astro Awani journalist based in Perlis has passed away, suspected to have died from a heart attack, while returning home after covering the evacuation of Malaysians stranded by floods in Hatyai, Thailand.
Asry Ahmad, 49, is believed to have suffered a suspected heart attack in the early hours while traveling home after completing his coverage.
Astro Awani reported that before receiving the devastating news, his wife, Norhanani Ahmad had received a poignant final voice note from her husband expressing his love for the family.
“Dad loves you all, take good care of yourselves,” the message read.
Norhanani recalled that in their final conversation, her husband had expressed his wish to return home to Perlis, worried that their house might also be affected by rising floodwaters.
“He (Asry) had a history of heart issues and may have been exhausted from covering the evacuation yesterday. He wanted to return before the situation worsened, but he did not make it,” she said.
Norhanani recounted the tragic circumstances of his passing:
“During the journey, Asry’s car became trapped in floodwaters and could not be restarted. He got out to try to push the car but suddenly collapsed, possibly due to a heart attack and drowned,” Norhanani added.
Asry had previously worked as a journalist with Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) and the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) before joining Astro Awani in Perlis.
He leaves behind his wife, Norhanani and six children, the youngest aged 11.
