Muhyiddin reportedly offers to step down as PN chief

PETALING JAYA: There are unconfirmed reports that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has offered to step down as Perikatan Nasional chief.

The offer is said to be due to tensions between Pas and Bersatu following the recent political fallout in Perlis, according to a Perikatan insider cited by SuaraTV.

It is believed the offer came about after some Pas leaders blamed Bersatu for the debacle, with Muhyiddin facing criticism. However, a Bersatu insider said many in the party leadership hope Muhyiddin will stay on to steer Perikatan, given his role as a founder.

The Star is currently reaching out to Muhyiddin for confirmation.

The dispute began when eight Bersatu and three Pas assemblymen submitted statutory declarations (SDs) to the palace, withdrawing their support for Mohd Shukri Ramli as Menteri Besar. The Pas assemblymen were later sacked from the party.

The current Menteri Besar, Abu Bakar Hamzah, who was sworn in on Sunday, is from Bersatu.

Muhyiddin has stated there was no instruction given to the Bersatu assemblymen involved to sign any SD.

However, some Pas leaders have taken to social media to express dissatisfaction over Bersatu's role, with many questioning the party's loyalty to Perikatan and even calling for Pas to re-examine the alliance. – THE STAR
