Selangor Pas Youth urges party to reassess political ties with Bersatu
The call was driven by current political realities and the need to safeguard the interests of Pas and the public, rather than emotional considerations.

SHAH ALAM – Selangor Pas Youth has called on the party’s central leadership to conduct a thorough and bold reassessment of its political cooperation with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), citing concerns over electoral performance, internal trust and the long-term direction of the party.
In a statement issued on Monday, Selangor Pas Youth chief Mohamed Sukri Omar said the call was driven by current political realities and the need to safeguard the interests of Pas and the public, rather than emotional considerations.
He said Bersatu’s performance in recent elections showed a decline in public support, particularly among Malay voters, resulting in the party increasingly relying on Pas for political survival in many constituencies.
“However, seat demands and political influence sought by Bersatu are often not proportional to its actual contribution,” he said, adding that the imbalance contradicted the principles of fairness and sincerity underpinning political cooperation or tahaluf siyasi.
Sukri also expressed concern over ongoing investigations and prosecutions involving Bersatu’s top leadership, saying the issue had negatively affected the image of Perikatan Nasional (PN) as a whole.
“Although Pas is not involved, public perception views the coalition as a single entity. Pas should not continue to play the role of ‘rescuer’ for another party at the expense of its own political future,” he said.
He stressed that political cooperation is only justified as long as it brings benefits, adding that reviewing or even ending alliances is part of a necessary process of reform (islah) and self-evaluation (muhasabah) for the greater good of the ummah.
Sukri also alluded to recent political developments within PN, describing them as a reminder of the importance of honesty and loyalty among allies.
“Recent incidents involving betrayal and friends turning against one another have highlighted how critical trust is in achieving shared political goals,” he said.
He urged the Pas central leadership to take firm action in reassessing its relationship with Bersatu to protect the party’s image, uphold Islamic political principles and strengthen Pas as a credible future governing party.
“This is necessary to restore public confidence in Pas as a party capable of leading the nation,” he added.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions within PN following political developments in Perlis, which have renewed debate over alliances and leadership within the opposition bloc.
Earlier today, PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced he will step down as chairman effective Jan 1, 2026, expressing gratitude for the support of component parties since PN’s formation.
Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and information chief Datuk Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz said Muhyiddin had notified leaders via the party’s supreme council WhatsApp group and declined calls to reconsider.
The announcement triggered a series of state-level resignations.
Former Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Sahruddin Jamal, former Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu and Negeri Sembilan PN chairman Mohamad Hanifah Abu Baker all confirmed they would step down in line with Muhyiddin’s departure.
At the central level, Azmin will also relinquish his role as PN secretary-general, signalling a wider leadership reshuffle. Pas information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari described Muhyiddin’s move as timely, adding that Pas will nominate a candidate to lead the coalition in its next phase ahead of the 16th general election.
