Internal PN issue: Gerakan urges component parties to stay calm
Gerakan held the view that every leadership decision should align with the PN Constitution and be resolved through the coalition mechanisms agreed upon collectively.

GEORGE TOWN – Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan) has urged all component parties within Perikatan Nasional (PN) to remain calm and refrain from hasty actions following recent internal developments within the coalition.
Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai said the party was aware of issues related to the appointment of the Perlis Menteri Besar as well as the resignation of several key PN leaders, but emphasised that all leadership matters must be handled prudently and in accordance with the constitution.
He stated that Gerakan held the view that every leadership decision should align with the PN Constitution and be resolved through the coalition mechanisms agreed upon collectively.
“We respect the collective process within PN and are confident that the PN Supreme Council has the wisdom and maturity to discuss and resolve these matters properly,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
Lau, who is also Penang PN chairman added that in the current situation, all parties within PN must avoid any speculation that could undermine the coalition’s stability and reduce public confidence in PN.
“The main focus of PN at this time is to strengthen internal unity and empower the party machinery in preparation for the 16th General Election (GE16).
“This priority is crucial to ensure that PN continues to present itself as a stable coalition, trusted by the public and capable of offering responsible leadership oriented towards the interests of the people and the country’s future,” he said.
He said Gerakan remained committed as a component partner within PN and will continue to support all efforts to strengthen the coalition for the sake of political stability in the country.
Earlier, the Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced his resignation as PN chairman.
The resignation was confirmed by the former prime minister himself via a Facebook post on Tuesday, stating that his resignation would take effect on Jan 1, 2026.
Prior to this, several calls had been made by Pas, including by its Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, suggesting that the PN chairman position be handed over to Pas.
Tensions between Pas and Bersatu became more apparent following the political turmoil in Perlis, which saw the resignation of the Sanglang state assemblyman from Pas Mohd Shukri Ramli as Menteri Besar.
