BANTING – A loud banging sound initially thought to be a motorcycle exhaust turned out to be gunfire in an incident that claimed the life of a man at a fast-food restaurant here on Sunday.

The incident is believed to have occurred at about 10.05pm while the victim was outside the restaurant, when he was approached by a suspect riding a motorcycle.

The suspect is believed to have fired several shots at the victim.

A patron at a nearby premises said he was shocked to see police vehicles with sirens arriving at the scene.

“At first, I thought the loud sound was from a motorcycle exhaust.

“Not long after that, the police arrived… people ran and gathered in front here. It was truly shocking. This is the first time something like this has happened here,” he said when met at the scene.

A Sinar check found that the area had been cordoned off under tight police control to allow forensic teams to carry out examinations and investigations at the scene.

Several police officers were also seen trying to calm the victim’s family members who had arrived at the location.

The area was cleared at about 1.30am on Monday.

Also present at the scene were Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Hatta Che Din and Kuala Langat district police chief Superintendent Mohd Akmalrizal Radzi.

Akmalrizal said the Kuala Langat District Police Headquarters operations centre received information on the incident from MERS 999.

“The local male victim, believed to be in his 30s, was confirmed dead.

“The motive is still under investigation and the case has been classified under Section 302 of the Penal Code,” he said in a statement on Monday.

He added that members of the public who witnessed the incident or have information are urged to come forward at the nearest police station or contact the Kuala Langat District Police Headquarters operations room at 03-31872222.

The victim’s body, which sustained multiple gunshot wounds, was sent to Banting Hospital for a post-mortem.
