SHAH ALAM – The Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) has urged Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh to immediately resign from his position as a state executive councillor (exco) and act on his stated stance of leaving the Unity Government.

In a statement, Dapsy said the “exit government” narrative played up by Akmal recently had proven to be nothing more than political theatrics, after Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the Unity Government.

It pointed out that Zahid’s statement that Umno did not want to be “bitten by the same snake twice” had effectively put an end to speculation about negotiations between Umno and Pas.

“Akmal’s distorted interpretation that the Umno president supports Malay unity cooperation is clearly an attempt to mislead the public, disregard the party’s position and embarrass himself.

“So, if Akmal is truly principled, he can resign from his exco post immediately without any further delay.

“If he chooses to retain his current position, then he must retract his earlier statements and stop all actions and rhetoric that are clearly intended to undermine the government’s reform agenda and the well-being of the people,” the statement read.

Earlier, Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister said any decision to be made would be carefully and thoroughly considered to prevent Umno from being “bitten by the same snake a second time in the same place.”

Last Saturday, Akmal tabled two motions at a special Umno Youth convention – calling for the party to resume cooperation with Pas and to withdraw from the Unity Government to assume the role of the opposition.

Dapsy also reminded that the experience between 2020 and 2022 showed that the so-called “unity” between Umno, Pas and Bersatu had led to political instability and seat losses for Umno itself.

“Any attempt to repeat the same move would betray the people’s mandate and jeopardise the party’s own future.

“Dapsy stressed that the current priority is to drive economic recovery, ease the cost of living and continue reforms.

“The public is not interested in power struggles and only wants a stable government that is capable of governing,” it added.
