SHAH ALAM – Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has posted a message suggesting he may step away from frontline politics.

The Facebook post simply read, "It may be time to step aside."

It appeared to suggest that he was ready to resign and leave the unity government.

Akmal said he had done his best in leading Umno Youth.

“We have tried our best and delivered as best as we could. Perhaps the weakness comes from myself,” he wrote.

Earlier, the DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) urged Akmal to immediately resign as a state executive councillor and honour his stand to exit the unity government.

The Dapsy National in a statement said Akmal’s repeated gimmick about leaving the government had turned into political comedy after Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi affirmed loyalty to the unity administration.

On Saturday, Akmal tabled two motions at the Umno Youth special convention calling for cooperation with Pas and for the party to withdraw from the unity government to act as the opposition.

He also thanked supporters who had stood with him throughout the internal debate.

“Thank you to everyone who supports this struggle.

“I believe if our intentions are good for religion, race and the nation, the time will eventually come,” he said.
