SHAH ALAM - Eric Dane, the actor best known for his role as Dr Mark Sloan, or “McSteamy,” on Grey’s Anatomy, has died at the age of 53 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

His family confirmed that he passed away on Feb 19, surrounded by loved ones.

In a statement to People magazine, the family said Dane had faced the disease with courage and had spent his final days with close friends, his wife and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the centre of his world.

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.

“Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time,” the statement from his family said.

Dane publicly revealed in 2025 that he had been diagnosed with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Following his diagnosis, he became an advocate for ALS awareness and research, working with advocacy groups to push for legislation and funding.

Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane began his acting career with small television roles in the 1990s, appearing in series such as Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years and Roseanne. He later secured recurring roles before landing the part that would define much of his career.

He first appeared on Grey’s Anatomy in 2005 during its second season. His portrayal of the confident and charismatic Dr Sloan quickly made him a fan favourite, earning him a regular spot on the long-running medical drama. He remained on the show until Season 8 and later made guest appearances, including a return years later.

Beyond Grey’s Anatomy, Dane starred in TNT’s The Last Ship and HBO’s Euphoria, where he played Cal Jacobs, a complex and troubled father figure. He continued working in film and television even after going public with his illness.

In an earlier interview with The Washington Post, Dane said he chose to speak openly about his diagnosis in hopes of helping others.

“If I’m going out, I’m gonna go out helping somebody,” he said.

He is survived by his two daughters.
