Deaf and mute elderly woman dies in Simpang Pulai house fire
Her 79-year-old brother managed to escape the blaze and survived.

IPOH – An elderly woman with disabilities perished after the house she was living in along Jalan Lahat, Simpang Pulai, was destroyed in a fire on Wednesday night.
The victim, identified as 81-year-old Noriah Mat Desa, who was deaf and mute, was found burnt to death in the middle section of the living room.
Her 79-year-old younger brother managed to escape the blaze and survived.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Division assistant director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said the department received an emergency call at 10.31pm before a team from the Simpang Pulai Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene.
The fire involved a Class A house, which was about 90 per cent destroyed.
“Upon arrival, firefighters found the flames engulfing almost the entire house, with a victim trapped inside.
“After the fire was extinguished, the victim was found burnt to death in the middle section of the living room,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

Sabarodzi said the JBPM Fire Investigation Division, together with the police, is investigating the cause of the fire. The K9 Detection Unit was also called in to assist.
The victim’s body was handed over to the police for further action.
The operation involved 17 personnel from the Simpang Pulai station, assisted by the Pasir Puteh Fire and Rescue Station and the Pekan Baru Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Water was sourced from the fire engine tank and nearby hydrants. The fire was brought under control at 11.20pm, and the operation ended at 1.01am.
