Sukma rugby trainee loses leg in crash; father searches hours for severed limb
The severed leg was initially not found because the area was dark and it is believed to have been flung far from the scene.

KUALA KRAI – A father spent nearly two hours searching for his son’s severed right leg after a road accident at Kampung Bechah Salak along Jalan Batu Balai–Chuchoh Puteri on Saturday night.
The accident occurred at about 10.30pm when Terengganu Sukma rugby trainee Sayyid Iskandar Mohamad Azaha, 20, lost his right leg after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a car. He is a final-year Diploma in Electrical Technology student at Kuala Krai Vocational College.
His younger sister, Nurul Asyiqin, 18, said their parents rushed to the scene from their home in Bukit Acheh, Kampung Tengah, after being informed by a neighbour’s child.
She said their father, Mohamad Azaha Ismail, 53, spent about two hours searching for his son’s severed leg.
“Although it was eventually found, it could not be reattached because my brother’s leg was severed from the hip down.
“What made it even more heartbreaking was that my father personally handled my brother’s leg by washing and burying it, even though he is afraid of blood. Until now, both my parents remain silent and devastated because my brother is the eldest son and the family’s hope,” she said when contacted on Monday.
She added that their mother, Nik Zurinawati Yusuf, 46, a nurse at Hospital Sultan Ismail Petra (HSIP), also attended to the victim when she arrived at the scene.
“She is used to handling emergencies, but this time she was traumatised because the victim was her own child,” she said.
Asyiqin said her brother was rushed to hospital for treatment due to heavy bleeding. The severed leg was initially not found because the area was dark and it is believed to have been flung far from the scene.
He underwent surgery from about 11pm until 5am and was later placed under sedation for further treatment.
Before the accident, she said her brother had asked their mother for permission to join a moreh challenge scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, but she did not allow it as it would be held during Ramadan.
“About an hour before the incident, he tried to persuade our mother because he really wanted to join the challenge. After speaking with her, he played with our youngest sibling before going out for moreh with his friends.
“On the day of the incident, Sayyid did not go to the mosque for tarawih prayers as he usually did. We were told that the car was overtaking while going uphill, while my brother and three others were riding motorcycles.
“My brother was at the back and when the car overtook while going uphill, he is believed not to have seen the vehicle’s sudden appearance, which led to the collision,” she said.
