30 urns containing human ashes stolen and held for extortion in Nilai

NILAI – Police are continuing their investigation into a theft and extortion case involving urns containing human ashes at a memorial park here last month.

Nilai District Police Chief Superintendent Johari Yahya said the incident was reported on February 26 after the management discovered that 30 urns were missing.

“Preliminary investigations found that the suspect contacted the management via WhatsApp using an international number, claiming to have found the missing ashes.

“The suspect then allegedly demanded payment as a condition for returning the ashes,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

He added that the case has been classified under Sections 380, 384 and 297 of the Penal Code.

“Investigations are ongoing, including efforts to identify the suspect and trace the communication network used.

“This case involves cross-border communication and the use of digital technology. The police are seeking technical assistance from the relevant agencies,” he said.

He advised the public not to speculate and to allow the police to carry out a thorough investigation.
