Lifetime ban for drunk drivers who kill, Selangor Pas proposes
The measure should be implemented to protect public safety while serving as a strong deterrent to offenders.

SHAH ALAM – Pas Selangor has proposed stricter action, including lifetime driving bans for individuals convicted of drunk driving that results in death.
Its commissioner Ab Halim Tamuri said the measure should be implemented to protect public safety while serving as a strong deterrent to offenders.
He said the party viewed seriously the recurring fatal accidents involving drivers under the influence of alcohol, which indicated that existing measures were still insufficient.
“This situation proves that current laws and enforcement are not sufficiently deterrent.
“Firmness means little if implementation is lax and inconsistent,” he said in a statement on Monday.
Halim said although the government has increased penalties for such offences, they have yet to produce a truly effective deterrent effect.
As such, Pas Selangor also proposed that compensation be automatically channelled to victims’ families without the need for lengthy and burdensome civil lawsuits.
He added that an approach based on the principle of diyat (blood money) could also be considered as an additional mechanism within the existing legal framework, in line with justice values.
At the same time, he suggested establishing a dedicated database to identify individuals with alcohol addiction for better monitoring and more systematic intervention.
He said preventive efforts should be strengthened through support measures such as free counselling and rehabilitation programmes to assist those struggling with addiction.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility and requires firmer, more comprehensive and bold action from the government,” he said.
On Sunday, Sinar reported that a motorcyclist was killed after being hit by a car driven by an individual under the influence of alcohol and drugs in a three-vehicle crash along Jalan Raya Barat, Klang, at about 11.40am.
South Klang police chief ACP Lim Jit Huey said the accident involved a motorcycle and two cars - a Honda City and a Perodua Myvi.
