MCMC investigating five individuals for disseminating false info on fuel price hike

PUTRAJAYA - The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating five individuals suspected of disseminating false information regarding the increase in petrol and diesel prices on Threads.
It said that three of the five individuals have been called up to have their statements recorded for investigation purposes.
"Based on the complaints received, the content disseminated by all the individuals regarding the petrol and diesel price hikes was found to be false, misleading and has the potential to cause anxiety to consumers.
"Following further review, Buletin TV3 has issued a denial on the publication of the content that was edited using their visual identity,” the MCMC said in a statement.
In a related development, the MCMC said it also received a complaint from Buletin TV3 that the fake content, which has gone viral, was not from them but from a third party.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which provides a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years or both upon conviction.
The MCMC emphasised that it takes a serious view of any misuse of social media platforms for the purpose of misleading the public through the dissemination of false information.
"Stern action will be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws,” it added.
The public is reminded to use social media responsibly and not misuse communication facilities to the extent that it could affect community harmony and public order. - BERNAMA
