SHAH ALAM - The government’s anti-corruption efforts are increasingly seen as falling short, as public concern rises and trust in its commitment continues to decline.

Selangor Pas Youth deputy chief Muhammad Faizzuddin Mohd Zai said the controversy surrounding Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has triggered widespread concern and damaged the nation’s image.

He said the public is beginning to question the government’s rhetoric on governance and reform, as the issue involving the head of the anti-corruption agency is perceived to have not been handled transparently.

“At a time when people are struggling with rising living costs and economic pressures, they expect a government that is clean, free from abuse of power and willing to act fairly.

“However, the failure to ensure transparency in this matter reflects poorly on the country’s integrity,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

He stressed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim could not hide behind civil servants or use them as a political shield for the government.

He said the public is watching closely and will hold the government fully accountable for any actions that could affect the country’s image.

In this regard, he proposed that the government suspend Azam from his duties until investigations are completed and appoint a more credible acting replacement to restore public confidence in the MACC.

“The government must expedite the investigation, as the issue has drawn significant concern from both the public and the international community.

“The longer the investigation is delayed, the more public trust in the government will decline,” he added.
