Massive fire wipes out 200 houses in Sabah water village
All residents were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

SANDAKAN – About 200 homes in a water village at Kampung Bahagia here were completely destroyed in an early Sunday morning fire.
In the incident, which occurred at around 1.30am, all residents were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs. No casualties have been reported so far.
Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station chief Jimmy Lagung said they received an emergency call at 1.32am before launching firefighting operations.
He said a total of 30 personnel were deployed, including assistance from the Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station, to contain the blaze.
“According to reports, the fire involved 200 non-permanent water houses and resulted in 100 per cent destruction.
“Firemen faced difficulties due to narrow access routes that hindered the movement of fire engines to the scene.
“In addition, low tide conditions made it difficult to obtain an open water source, while strong winds and the close proximity of houses caused the fire to spread rapidly,” he said in a statement.

He added that firemen used water from tankers as well as pressurised hydrants from a nearby factory to battle the blaze.
“Firefighting efforts are still ongoing and the situation has yet to be fully brought under control.
“Further updates will be provided from time to time,” he said.
