“It is time for a portion of Johor’s tax revenue to be returned” – Regent of Johor
Tunku Ismail reiterated the call for the return of tax revenue so that Johor would not be overly dependent on the Federal Government.

ISKANDAR PUTERI - The Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, decreed that 25 per cent of Johor’s income tax revenue should be returned to the state.
Tunku Ismail reiterated the call for the return of tax revenue so that Johor would not be overly dependent on the Federal Government in ensuring development and the welfare of its people.
“Johor is among the main contributors to the nation’s revenue. However, the returns received are still not commensurate with the needs of development and public welfare.
“Therefore, I would like to urge the Federal Government that the time has come for a portion of the tax revenue generated by Johor - at least 25 per cent - to be returned to the state.
“This is important so that Johor can manage the needs of its people more efficiently without having to fully rely on a lengthy approval process,” His Highness said while officiating the First Meeting of the Fifth Term of the 15th Johor State Legislative Assembly at Bangunan Sultan Ismail here on Thursday.
Tunku Ismail also expressed hope that Johor would be given the space to stand more independently, in line with its role as a major contributor to the national economy.
Last year, the Regent of Johor raised the same issue when he reportedly urged the Federal Government to consider returning 20 to 30 per cent of tax revenue collected from Johor.
His Highness added that Johor has successfully attracted investments amounting to RM272 billion, including making history in 2025 by recording RM110 billion in investments — the highest ever achieved by any state in Malaysia.
“This achievement has created more than 80,000 job opportunities for Johoreans and Malaysians.
“I have also been informed that Johor’s state revenue continues to increase, reaching RM2.68 billion in 2025.
“This reflects the strength of the economic fundamentals as well as the efficiency of the state government’s governance in managing resources and revenue effectively,” he said.
