CAIRO - A motorised tricycle fell into a canal in Egypt's southern governorate of Asyut on Tuesday, killing at least nine children and injuring two others aboard, local authorities said, reported Xinhua.

The accident occurred in the Abu Tig district, according to a statement from the Asyut governorate.

Governor Mohamed Alwan visited the site to oversee search-and-rescue efforts and coordinate with executive, security and rescue authorities, it said.

Alwan said that the governorate was mobilising all available resources to respond to the tragedy, stressing that protecting citizens' lives and safety was a top priority.

He also ordered the installation of concrete barriers and other protective measures along both sides of the canal, in coordination with the water resources and irrigation authorities, to enhance safety and prevent similar accidents.
