Sanusi's speech set to remain a campaign issue
Racial issues carry strong emotional appeal and are easily amplified through short video clips and social media.

SHAH ALAM – The controversy surrounding Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor's speech, which has been alleged to contain racial undertones, is expected to remain a key campaign issue until polling day for the Negeri Sembilan state election (PRN) on Aug 1, particularly during the final days of campaigning.
Political analyst Professor Datuk Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi said this is because racial issues carry strong emotional appeal and are easily amplified through short video clips and social media.
He said such issues tend to attract public attention more quickly than discussions on investment figures, state development or economic policies.
"Overall, I do not see this issue alone creating a major wave across Negeri Sembilan.
"However, it could produce a small shift of around one to three percentage points among fence-sitters or influence voter turnout.
"In marginal seats, even a shift that small could be enough to determine the outcome," he told Sinar Harian.
Awang Azman said the impact could be greater among non-Malay voters, particularly the Chinese and Indian communities.
He explained that the issue could heighten concerns over the type of politics that would emerge from the BN-PN cooperation.
"The impact may not necessarily be a direct shift in support, but rather greater motivation to turn out and vote to prevent candidates associated with such rhetoric from winning.
"For moderate Malay voters and fence-sitters, the remarks could also create discomfort, particularly among professionals and urban and semi-urban voters who prefer stability and less confrontational politics.
"This group may view BN or PH as a safer choice. At the same time, the narrative that Sanusi's speech has been manipulated could generate solidarity and further strengthen his existing support," he said.
