MIRI - Post-mortem examinations on all five victims of the Flying Doctor Service (FDS) helicopter crash in Long Lellang on Tuesday were still ongoing as of 5pm today, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said.

"The post-mortems are still ongoing,” he told Bernama when contacted.

It is understood that the examinations at Hospital Miri’s Forensic Department are taking time due to the condition of the victims’ remains, which were badly burnt and incomplete, requiring meticulous examination.

A Bernama check at the hospital found the entrance gate to the Forensic Department closed, with outsiders barred from entering the area.

Media personnel who had been waiting since morning at the lobby of the hospital’s old building also did not see any of the victims’ family members in the area.

Bernama was also made to understand that once the post-mortems are completed, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) samples will be sent to the Chemistry Department in Kuching for analysis and formal identification.

The remains can only be released to the respective families after the analysis and identification process is completed.

On Tuesday, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) said a BO-105 helicopter carrying five people, including the pilot, crashed near the Long Lellang Short Take-Off and Landing Airport (STOLport).

Those killed were pilot Captain Zainol Afiq Bee Sham, 30; medical officer Dr Ainul Baraah Kamaruddin, 33; medical assistant Alexson Adit Henry, 31; and nurses Debra Moset, 40, and Jessie Paya Jok, 44. -BERNAMA
