A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of North Sumatra around noon on Tuesday, with authorities confirming that there is no tsunami threat. Photo for illustration purposes only.

Earlier, Director-General of the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the earthquake, centred 49 km west of Kudat, posed no tsunami threat but was the strongest to hit the country in the past 11 years.

MetMalaysia said the epicentre was located about 82 km southwest of Cotabato City, the Philippines.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), in a statement, said that the quake was centred at coordinates 8.3 degrees south and 111.3 degrees east, at a depth of 118 kilometres.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake shook the coast of western Japan on Tuesday, the country's meteorological office said, with no tsunami warning issued.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.9 struck Ibaraki Prefecture in eastern Japan at 7.05 pm (local time) on Friday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
