SHAH ALAM – Pas has signalled that it may reassess its political cooperation framework if issues arising from the Perlis crisis are not addressed responsibly.
Selangor Pas Youth chief Mohamed Sukri Omar said continued avoidance or lack of accountability by Bersatu would undermine trust, discipline and the mandate entrusted to the coalition by voters.
“Pas is of the view that the move to appoint a Menteri Besar from Bersatu has had a significant impact on the relationship between Pas and Bersatu within Perikatan Nasional (PN).
“In a coalition framework, any major decision involving state leadership should be discussed collectively and decided through formal consultation mechanisms, rather than being undertaken unilaterally,” he said.
He highlighted that the action was driven by five Bersatu assemblymen together with three individuals whose Pas membership had already been terminated due to breaches of party discipline.
In this context, he said Pas believed Bersatu should have shown respect for its role as a key coalition partner in PN, particularly since Pas holds the majority of seats in the Perlis State Assembly.
“Submitting statutory declarations without any consultation with Pas runs contrary to the norms, spirit of consensus and power-sharing principles that underpin a political coalition,” he added.
Pas also acknowledged the deep disappointment among party leaders and grassroots supporters, which stemmed from fundamental concerns over trust and the coalition’s mandate rather than mere emotion.
The party viewed recent developments as a betrayal of the political understanding that had been built collectively.
Sukri also said Bersatu must take responsibility to address the situation, warning that continued avoidance or lack of accountability could lead the party to reassess its political cooperation framework to protect its principles, maintain internal discipline and uphold the confidence of voters, with acts of betrayal seen as unacceptable and undermining the party’s foundation.
He said political stability cannot be achieved through optimistic statements alone.
“Stability must be grounded in genuine trust and collective responsibility.
“The crisis surrounding the change of Menteri Besar arose due to a loss of trust involving all Bersatu assemblymen together with the three former Pas members and it was this unilateral action that triggered political turbulence in Perlis,” he said.
In this context, he said Pas held that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, as president of Bersatu, bears both moral and political responsibility to resolve the impasse in a mature and structured manner.
Sukri pointed out that this involved reassessing the management of PN and engaging formally with the Pas president to restore confidence and clarify the coalition’s direction.
He expressed confidence that the public expects a strong, stable political coalition capable of governing without being caught up in internal crises adding that Pas will continue to focus on strengthening its party machinery, enhancing internal development and enforcing discipline among its members.
He also said those who violate party rules have no place in the party as its struggle is founded on trust and adherence to collective decisions.
“Pas will continue to cooperate with political partners who are loyal, principled and responsible.
“The path forward is clear: restoring trust through accountability, strengthening coalition management in a genuine manner and refocusing fully on serving the people,” he said.
