SHAH ALAM - An appropriate innovation is needed to ensure that students would not face serious consequences as a result of carrying heavy bags to school.

West Malaysia Malay Teachers’ Association (KGMMB) deputy president Mohd Said Hussin said among the innovations that can help lessen the students' burden from having to carry heavy school bags, was by utilising e-books in schools.

“An e-book is a learning method that makes it very easy for students. It can reduce their burden of carrying many books which are heavy to school.

"It can support many online learning materials so that students can learn faster," he told Sinar Harian.

Besides providing a conducive learning environment, e-books could also help students get access to educational information faster with internet connection.

This, he said could make the learning process smoother and more fun.

He added that reducing the heavy loads on students' bags by utilising e-books, can also reduce paper use.

“The e-book application is very convenient as everything is just at your fingertips.

"Students just need workbooks to enhance their thinking skills and replace text books or other references with the e-books," he said.

He said it would be better that e-books were provided to all students without exception so that no one would get left behind in the latest technology for education.

Mohd Said, who is also the Congress of Unions of Teachers in the Malaysian Education Service secretary-general said teachers also need to have supporting teaching materials with the use of e-books so that it is in line with the learning technology used by students.

“Teachers also need to be given materials such as Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and screening room to support the learning process using e-books," he said.

Apart from e-books, Mohd Said said he strongly supported the government's efforts in providing gadgets to school students which is in line with the government's innovation towards the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0).
