PUTRAJAYA - The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has recorded a conviction rate of 91.1 per cent or 266 cases last year.

MACC Chief Tan Sri Azam Baki said 292 court cases were concluded from the total 1,283 bribery cases brought to the Sessions Court.

As for property forfeiture cases, 121 cases have been concluded from the 152 cases brought to the court.

He said during the speech at MACC Media Awards 2021, in the MACC Headquarters, here, on Tuesday.

During the award, Sinar Harian journalists Mohamad Hisyamuddin Ayub and Muhammad Afham Ramli won the Jury Award 2021 for the MACC print media category.

Further commenting, he added in terms of asset recovery, the forfeited assets returned to the government last year amounted to RM5.1 billion with 99.57 percent were from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

He said MACC's jurisdiction includes investigating complaints of bribery.

"If it is found to have reasonable cause and there was an offence under the jurisdiction of the MACC, an investigation will be opened and upon completion, it will be referred to the Attorney General's Office for further action," he said.

MACC, he said backs the cases with strong evidence for the AGC to take the cases to court.

"In this regard, the success of MACC investigations can be measured by the success the prosecution in court," said Azam.
