GE15: EC told to provide ballots in braille for the blind

SHAH ALAM - The sightless and visually impaired voters in Malaysia should have access to brailled ballots, a charity has suggested to the Election Commission (EC).
The improvement idea was mooted by One Love Charity Society president Jeyaraj Santraju in an exclusive interview during Sinar Daily's Fireside Chat today.
This was so as Jeyaraj believed that blind people should be allowed exercise their voting rights by themselves instead of relying on the help of others.
“When it comes to the blind, they have a very huge society, so they can have something like the army voting or postal voting. They can have a people with disabilities (PWD) voting system too.
“Let the blind touch [the ballot] with braille and let them tick it by themselves,” he said.
He was also of the opinion that tighter regulations were needed vis-a-vis the voting mechanism for the visually impaired adding that such voters must be accompanied with a truly reliable help.
“They also need to experience the happiness of touching a brailled ballot when they cast their vote.
"They must have that," said Jeyaraj who became a PWD due to a spinal cord injury which paralysed him from waist down.
