MCMC, police hot on trail of 'May 13' TikTok content creators

MCMC and police are tracking down the paymasters of three TikTok videos provoking racial and religious tensions

The videos in which threats of racial violence akin to the May 13, 1969 riots were issued, were exposed by a news portal last week, which prompted investigations that subsequently found that the videos were postings of which its paymasters can be traced.
"The spread of such provocative content is aimed at triggering disharmony, hatred and prejudice among people. This is an offence under Act 574 of the Penal Code, which carries fines and imprisonment or both if found guilty," read an MCMC statement issued today.
"Sharing such videos is an irresponsible act, which can cause interracial and inter-religious disharmony, disunity and hatred driven by prejudice," the statement added.
MCMC and the police will thus be increasing surveillance to curb the spread of such narratives on social media.
The MCMC also called on the public to not share or spread such videos, including sharing them on various other platforms.
The public is also advised to immediately report content that are inciting or provoking racial and religious tension, as well as those that insult the Malay Rulers, to the MCMC.
