KUALA TERENGGANU - Livestock breeders in Terengganu suffered losses of up to RM3.47 million in the recent flood.

Their losses comprised livestock that perished in the flood, damaged pens, gates, and machinery and equipment used to breed these animals.

Terengganu Veterinary Services Department (JPV) director Dr Anun Man said a total of 43,789 cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, quail, and deer were reported to have been killed in the disaster.

She said the chickens accounted for the highest number (37,612) followed by quail (3,000), ducks (1,4442), cows (502), lamb (142), sheep (64), buffalo (20) and deer (seven).

"As of Sunday, we received 712 complaints on animal casualties in the state. Besut recorded the highest number of cases, followed by Setiu and Kemaman.

"We are expecting more cases to reported in the coming days as some breeders have not officially declared their losses to JPV," she said when contacted by Sinar Harian on Wednesday.

Anun said these animals were reported killed due to drowning, swept away by strong currents and cold when the flood rose up.

Apart from casualties, she said some 365,600 cattle, buffaloes, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, quail, and deer were also affected throughout the state due to the Northeast Monsoon phenomenon.

"The District Veterinary Services Office is still collecting data on the number of livestock affected by the flood, and we are requesting owners of those animals that were affected to make a report for further action," she said.
