SHAH ALAM - Former Umno veteran Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim has launched Perpaduan Ummah after receiving an approval from the Registrar of Societies (RoS) on Dec 29.

Shahidan, the NGO's secretary-general said the goal of the organisation was to unite Malaysians from various polical background and to carry out welfate work.

Based on Astro Awani's report, Shahidan said that the organisation would also be expanded to all 222 parliamentary constituencies nationwide to get people to work together after the 15th General Election (GE15).

Shahidan who joined Perikatan Nasional just before elections further said that one of the promises in the Perlis Perikatan Nasional (PN) manifesto was to ensure Mohd Shukri Ramli, the Perlis chief minister, would be in charge of the state's leadership structure.

The Arau MP said the membership for the Perpaduan Ummah will be open tonight onwards.

"I understand Perpaduan Ummah (is receiving) a lot of support from social media.

"(For people from) other parliamentary constituencies (who are interested) can also continue (by registering as members), the address of the individual concerned will be determined in which Parliament they are at.

"For (the organisation), I am only a facilitator. From now on, this organisation will be led by a more powerful and branded person," he said.

Shahidan said this at a press conference after the launch of the Perpaduan Ummah at the Arau Parliament Service Center, Kubang Gajah, on Saturday.

According to him, the organisation's launch was carried out in the Arau parliament seat to ensure its organisational structure could be emulated in other constituencies.

He further said the setting up of Perpaduan Ummah was not to 'fight' against the Muafakat Nasional led by Tan Sri Annuar Musa.

"There is no problem (between Tan Sri and me). Muafakat Nasional (MN) is also an NGO, Perpaduan Ummah is an NGO.

"Only we (PN) in Perlis have written Perpaduan Ummah on the (election) poster, (other states all use) PN Best," he said.

Tan Sri Annuar Musa, the MN president, said in a Facebook post on Dec 12 that the NGO had received more than 10,000 applications in the first few hours they were open.

He said the support gave him new strength to continue fighting.

He said that the MN would be put into action to promote consensus, community unity, and a more honest political system in the country. He also said that the NGO would be based on the Rukun Negara and the Malaysian Constitution.
