PUTRAJAYA - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Bersatu's top leadership to explain to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on how the party was able to collect a large amount of money in a short period of time.

Anwar was commenting on Bersatu's accounts which had been frozen recently in relation to MACC's investigations towards the former government's stimulus funds amounting to RM92.5 billion during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The funds had allegedly been misappropriated.

"Bersatu has to explain to the investigators on how they were able to collect so much money in a short time period, from where and from whom?

"This is MACC's job and then it is taken to the Attorney General's Office (AGC) according to the law and due processes

"I don't know anything more than that, everyone is subjected to being investigated if there is a need, it does not matter whether they are from the government or the opposition," he said in a press conference after the cabinet meeting in Putrajaya today.

Anwar then reiterated his stance that investigative, enforcement and judicial bodies remain free from executive interference.

"It is irresponsible for political figures in the investigation process to make accusations about an intervention from the unity government. We do not interfere in things as what was done by the previous government," he said.

Anwar said on his part he was merely carrying out his duties as the Finance Minister and had found that certain projects had cost too much and had been awarded without the correct tender processes.

"The government does not punish anyone. We just found irregularities in the government stimulus fund and the flood mitigation project during the pandemic period, so I disclosed the informaton from the Finance Ministry

"What MACC does is not subject to my point of view. They carried out a thorough investigation and found more than RM300 million in the party's account. This should be explained," he said.

Yesterday, Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said the party will continue to fully cooperate in the probe so that the malicious allegations against Bersatu can be put to an end.
