Over RM100,000 losses from Raya clothing scam since 2014, say cops

KUALA LUMPUR - Online clothing scam for Raya saw victims losing RM121,448 in the past nine years since 2014.

Bukit Aman commercial criminal investigation department (CCID) director Datuk Mohd Kamarudin Md Din said 29 cases were reported this year, inlcuding five cases this year, totalling RM13,500.

“Scammers take the opportunity to deceive victims especially with online purchases,” he told Sinar.

He said scammers also take opportunity to scam people with job opportunities, government or non-governmental programmes.

He advised the public to be vigilant in making online purchases and to check with authorities if there is any doubt.

“Immediately contact the bank or the national scam response centre (NSRC) on the line 997 if you realise you have fallen victim to an online scam," he said.

The public are also urged to check bank account and phone number of scammers at https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my or the official police CCID social media account and Cyber Crime Alert RMP for the latest information in commercial crimes,” he said.

Recently, the Communications and Digital Ministry shared a tactic used by scammers in creating fake social media account offering cheap prices for goods.
