Saudi Arabia resumes work of its diplomatic mission in Syria

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - Saudi Arabia has decided to resume the work of its diplomatic mission in Syria, said its Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The decision was made in the interest of contributing to the development of joint Arab action and strengthening security and stability in the region, according to the ministry's statement released by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Wednesday.

"... And taking into account the resolution issued by the ministerial meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Arab States Council, which was held in Cairo on May 7, that stipulates the resumption of the participation of Syria's delegations in the meetings of the Arab League Council and all its affiliated organisations and agencies,...the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has decided to resume the work of its diplomatic mission in the Syrian Arab Republic," the statement read.

Saudi Arabia's decision was also in line with its commitment to the principles of the United Nations’ Charters and the Arab League as well as international conventions and norms, said the ministry.

The Arab League on Sunday decided to reinstate Syria’s membership after 12 years of suspension.

The decision to reinstate Syria's membership comes ahead of the annual Arab summit in Saudi Arabia on May 19.

Syria was suspended from the 22-state body in 2011 over the Syrian regime’s brutal crackdown on pro-democracy protests, which led to a civil war.

The Syrian regime, however, began to exchange official visits and contacts with several Arab countries in recent months. - BERNAMA-SPA

World Saudi could get first Miss Universe contestant this year
