SHAH ALAM - KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) collected some 7,700 metric tonnes of domestic waste in Selangor on the first two days of Eid celebration this year.

Its managing director, Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir said the number was reduced compared to last year's almost 10,000 metric tonnes of waste.

"The reduced waste in the state was because many have left Selangor to return to their hometowns since Thursday. Not many people stayed back this time in the state during Hari Raya.

"On Saturday we recorded almost 4,000 tonnes (waste collected) from the average of 7,000 tonnes a day (for the state).

"On Sunday we collected around 3,700 metric tonnes, bringing the total to 7,700 metric tonnes for the first two days of Eid compared to 10,000 last year," he said on Thursday.

He was met by reporters at the KDEBWM Eid Open House with over 2000 visitors, including local leaders, at the Shah Alam Convention Centre in Section 14, here.

Ramli added that although the number of residents fluctuates from time to time, KDEBWM will always carry out its duties to collect waste effectively and efficiently.

"However, a week after Eid, when everyone started returning home to Selangor, the numbers went up again with the hosting of numerous open houses.

"Many people in residential areas hosted open houses during weekends, causing an influx of waste, primarily food waste," he said.

He advised everyone who wants to organise open houses to prepare a proper waste collection area appropriate for the types of waste.

"Ensure the waste is thrown inside plastic bags to ease the collection process, and I urge visitors not to waste food and ensure the food taken is not more than what could be consumed," he said.
